English and Reading

English

At Cambridge Primary School we believe that literacy and communication are the principal key life skills that our children need and English in the spoken and written form are the foundations of all learning.

Our aim is to help all our children gain the knowledge that will enable them to communicate effectively in society and the world they will grow up in.

The teaching of English is everywhere at Cambridge Primary! Giving our children the opportunities to communicate is our key priority. Talking at playtimes, asking and answering questions during lunch, using our manners in the corridor or just saying good morning, our aim is to engage our children, parents and community in sharing their thoughts and ideas to broaden their horizons and open their eyes to new opportunities.

Through the National Curriculum and using cross curricular links where appropriate, our English lessons are linked to a text many of which are selected from our carefully chosen literacy spine. The literacy spine was created so that our children are given the opportunity to experience a wide range of stimulating texts which they can refer to through their educational journey.

Using our stimulating texts each year group plans opportunities for our children to use discussion in order to learn, allowing each child to elaborate and explain clearly their understanding and ideas. We link our reading to writing opportunities, supporting children to write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style in and for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences.

Phonics and spelling are taught explicitly in separate sessions in Reception and Key Stage 1, more often in Key Stage 2 this learning is embedded in English lessons and across with wider curriculum. Reception and Key Stage 1 use Jolly Phonics, Letters and Sounds and progress to using Spelling Shed in Year 2. In Key Stage 2 Spelling Shed is used to implement the National Curriculum requirements for each year group.
